EMDR Therapy

How Does The Past Still Affect How You Feel Today?

Experiences from the past can affect us in ways we don’t fully understand. You may find yourself feeling anxious or overwhelmed in certain situations, avoiding places that bring up difficult feelings, struggling to find or keep a relationship, or having difficulty relaxing even when life is going well.

You might also struggle with everyday situations, such as “saying no,” setting boundaries with toxic friends or family members, speaking up for yourself, or speaking in public. Sometimes, these challenges are connected to past experiences that left you feeling fearful, alone, inadequate or unsafe. Even when you know you’re okay, a part of you may still be responding as though those earlier experiences are happening all over again.

You might even wonder why you’re still struggling or feel that you “should be over it” by now.

You don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Therapy offers a safe, supportive space to explore these patterns, understand where they may come from, and begin creating new ways of responding to life’s challenges.

Together, we can work toward helping you feel more confident, set healthy boundaries, find a healthy relationship and experience calmness in your daily life.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an extensively researched therapeutic approach to help your brain heal from traumatic events/memories. Memories can be “frozen in time,” which cause distress like nightmares, flashbacks, and emotional intensity when triggered. EMDR uses guided “bilateral stimulation” (eye movements, tapping, audio tones) to facilitate the brain safely reprocess traumatic memories, decreasing their emotional intensity and vividness.

What Can EMDR Therapy Help With?

If you find yourself struggling with emotions, anxiety, or patterns that are difficult to change, EMDR may help. Experiences from our past continue to influence how we feel about ourselves, how we respond or react to others, and how we manage stress in everyday situations.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy that helps people process distressing memories and experiences so they can become less emotionally overwhelming. It can help you develop a new perspective on the past and feel more comfortable in the present.

Understanding the Connection Between Past and Present

Sometimes, a current challenge may be connected to an earlier experience that taught you to feel afraid, ashamed, inadequate, unsafe, or unworthy. For example, if you learned early in life that disagreeing with others led to conflict, saying no as an adult may bring up anxiety or guilt—even when setting a boundary is healthy.

EMDR may help you process the earlier experiences contributing to these reactions, allowing you to respond to present-day situations with greater confidence and emotional flexibility.

What to Expect During EMDR Therapy

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, especially when you’re working through painful experiences. My goal is to help you feel comfortable, supported, and understood throughout the process. EMDR therapy follows a structured protocol, but your treatment is always tailored to your individual needs and goals.

  1. Getting to Know You
We’ll begin by talking about your history, current concerns, and what you’d like to change. We’ll explore how past experiences may be affecting your life today and determine whether EMDR is the right treatment approach for you.
  2. Building a Foundation for Healing
Before we begin processing distressing memories, we’ll focus on helping you feel prepared and supported. You’ll learn coping and grounding techniques to manage difficult emotions, and we’ll discuss ways to help you feel more in control during sessions. We’ll move at a pace that respects your comfort and readiness.
  3. Working Through Difficult Experiences
When you’re ready, we’ll begin working with specific memories or experiences using EMDR’s structured treatment approach. With my guidance, you’ll notice the thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations connected to those experiences while engaging in bilateral stimulation (BLS).The goal of EMDR is to help your brain reprocess experiences that continue to feel distressing, so they may become less overwhelming and have less distressing on how you feel and respond in the present.
  4. Checking In and Moving Forward
Throughout treatment, I will check in on how you’re feeling and the progress you’re making toward your goals. Together, we’ll work toward helping you feel more confident, emotionally grounded, and able to manage life’s challenges with greater ease.

Your healing journey is personal. You don’t have to rush the process or work through everything at once. We’ll take it one step at a time, together.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. EMDR does not require you to share every detail of a painful or traumatic experience. We will talk about your history and concerns in order to develop a treatment plan. EMDR is different from talk therapy, you do not have to go into specific details. We’ll work together to help you feel safe, supported, and comfortable sharing at your own pace.

Everyone’s healing process is different. The number of sessions depends on your experiences, current issues, personal goals, and the support you need along the way. Some issues may take less time to address, while others require more gradual work. We’ll regularly check in on your progress and adjust your treatment plan to meet your needs.

EMDR can be helpful for many people, but there is no single therapeutic approach that works best for everyone. During our initial assessment, we’ll explore your presenting problems, history, and goals to determine whether EMDR is a good fit for you. If another therapeutic approach may better support your needs, we’ll discuss those options together.
